Emma Stone

It's delightfully painful and full of cringe comedy, but always with empathy for Penny. The production is a hot-ticket escape from a city where police are breaking up student protests and a former head of state is on trial for porn-star bribery. Inside the theater, the denizens of Weimar Germany writhing around this storied den are likewise at least temporarily inured from the political perils pressing on its doors. But in director Rebecca Frecknall’s ravishing and mercilessly introspective production of the 1966 musical by Joe Masteroff (book), John Kander (music) and Fred Ebb (lyrics), no one is safe from the turmoil rattling their psyches.

Willis’s resume ís as varied as it is impressive, indicative of a fearless approach to her career and artistry. Whether she’s on stage belting out a ballad or on screen embodying a character with complexity, Willis brings an infectious energy that embodies the daring spirit of the arts. Wars, she has navigated her career with grace and boldness worthy of her lineage.

Lilly, a British Zeta sister with social anxiety, says their new popularity has made them conceited and forget the true value of sisterhood. When they realize what they have become, they blame Shelley—just as she returns from her unsuccessful date. "As women get older, the range of characters that you get to play becomes narrower," she says.

Dennings has artfully navigated the shift from the small to the even smaller screen, from sidekick to leading lady. She’s become a veritable streaming sensation, effortlessly carrying series on her shoulders and proving that her charm and charisma are as boundless as the digital platforms she adorns. Dennings has certainly shaped her own unique nook in the entertainment world with her wit and relatability that keep audiences coming back for more. Stone’s transformation into one of Hollywood’s most coveted leading ladies speaks volumes about her persistence, talent, and ability to captivate audiences worldwide. As we look back, her time in “The House Bunny” serves as the first gleaming stone on a dazzling path of success — a path with no end in sight, as Stone continues to deliver one knock-out performance after another. Phi Iota Mu intercepts the invitations and prevents them from being mailed out, so the Zetas are again in danger of being shut down at the campus meeting of the Panhellenic Council.

You might also recognise her for her role as Kate Winslet's best friend in The Holiday, sharing the screen with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law. Her impressive resume includes appearances in acclaimed series such as Broadchurch, Merlin, Atlantis, and Doctor Who. Once upon a time in the sorority house, a star named Emma Stone emerged, sporting a sharp wit and eyes filled with dreams. As Natalie, she edged into the limelight, before rocketing to the stars with a career that could inspire its very own cinematic masterpiece. From her star-turning performance in “Easy A” to her Oscar-winning twirl across the “La La Land” skyline, Stone has crafted a filmography as nuanced as it is outstanding.

After her stint as the brains of the bunch, Stone skyrocketed to fame, and, let’s just say, she’s far from needing to refinance her career. She’s got an Oscar, folks, and has conquered both the silver screen and the hearts of fans globally. And, talk about a wardrobe upgrade from those Zeta tees—Stone has graced countless red carpets with the poise of a fashion icon, a far cry from her collegiate cardigans.

She is a self-flagellating environmentalist who arrives grumpy, sweaty and tired to every other scene. Touching upon ideas of who gets to seek justice and which voices are heard, After The Party has been celebrated for its moral complexity and performances from the cast. This provocative drama follows Penny who loses everything when she accuses her husband of a sex crime against her daughter's teenage friend, and no one believes her.

The movie follows Shelley, played by Anna Faris, a former Playboy bunny who becomes the house mother at an unpopular sorority. All that stripped-down humanity onstage — from the entrails of broken lovers to the dancers’ carnal gyrations (choreography is by Julia Cheng) — make Redmayne’s Emcee a jarring exception. An otherworldly salamander of a narrator, he hunches over, Gollum-like, gnawing on every syllable as if it were his last meal. For the Emcee to exist as a creature apart makes narrative sense, but Redmayne’s remoteness drains some of the force from what is otherwise a grounded, gut-punching take on a disturbingly timely story. In 2018 she starred in Brit action thriller Final Score alongside actors Dave Bautista and Pierce Brosnan. She has also been an ambassador for the domestic violence survivors' charity, Women's Aid, for nine years.

Post-bunny life saw Faris burn after reading scripts that offered her a mix of comedic and dramatic roles. Notably, she was the co-lead on CBS’s hit show “Mom,” where her comedic talents earned even more acclaim. However, Faris didn’t just stick to the screen — she hopped on over to the podcast world with “Anna Faris is Unqualified,” where she proved that her heart is as big as her sense of humor. Shelley is living a carefree life until a rival gets her tossed out of the Playboy Mansion. With nowhere to go, fate delivers her to the sorority girls from Zeta Alpha Zeta.

First legislative assembly in America convenes in Jamestown July 30, 1619

house of burgesses definition

While Washington commanded the continental army in New York, about four hundred miles south in Williamsburg, the end of the House of Burgesses signaled the end of British political rule in Virginia. In 2019, Virginia celebrated the 400th anniversary of the first representative legislative assembly in North America. While the idea of representation has continued to be redefined over the course of America’s experiment in democracy, it is important to understand the origins of democratic assembly in the United States, and its birth in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Some scholars (Price among them) question whether these first Africans were treated as slaves and argue they were considered more along the lines of indentured servants. Evidence does suggest the presence of free blacks in colonial Jamestown and certainly, by 1676 CE, there were black landowners and at least one on record as owning black slaves himself. Even if the Africans were not treated as slaves, however, they arrived in that condition aboard a Dutch ship, which had captured them as cargo from a Spanish trader.

The Last Session

On May 10, 1773, the Tea Act was passed which invited the fury of the colonists, and there were major protests. Due to these liberal measures and the policies of the legislative assembly, the popularity of governor Sir George Yeardley rose among the colonists, and he served as Virginia governor for two more terms. The Great Charter suspended the military government and replaced it with a monarch-approved governor and advisory council and authorized the governor to summon a General Assembly to create laws. Specify between which dates you want to search, and what keywords you are looking for. The House adjourned on June 24 and never again achieved a quorum (enough members to conduct business).

Wake Up to This Day in History

The first four conventions largely dealt with how to plan for the defense of the colony in the event of war, including establishing the Committee of Safety. The fifth Virginia Convention in 1776, however, formally declared the relationship between Virginia and King and Parliament “totally dissolved,” and instructed the Virginia delegates to the Second Continental Congress to vote in favor of a resolution on independence. This convention also made allowances for the establishment of the Virginia Declaration of Rights and a state constitution. The new Virginia state constitution, ratified in 1776, nullified Virginia’s previous colonial-era government, including the House of Burgesses.

Richard Henry Lee

Later, in 1730, when Lieutenant Governor William Gooch proposed a new tobacco inspection law, the assembly enacted it and retained the provisions that prevented the executive from appointing burgesses in an attempt to increase his influence in the assembly. In March 1643 Wyatt’s successor, Governor Sir William Berkeley, authorized the burgesses to sit apart from the Council members as a separate chamber in a bicameral assembly. Berkeley had arrived in Virginia at a time when the king assumed a relatively hands-off posture toward the colony, and the new governor sought to promote a new class of leaders who shared his ambitions for economic diversification and continuation of trade with the Netherlands.

On July 30, the House of Burgesses (an English word for “citizens”) convened for the first time. Its first law, which, like all of its laws, would have to be approved by the London Company, required tobacco to be sold for at least three shillings per pound. Other laws passed during its first six-day session included prohibitions against gambling, drunkenness and idleness, and a measure that made Sabbath observance mandatory. The burgesses continued to meet extra-legally in secret locations around Williamsburg, including the Raleigh Tavern, to discuss their next course of action. From these meetings came the Virginia Conventions, wherein many of the elected members were former burgesses.

In 1670 the assembly limited the right to vote for burgesses to adult men who owned land. With its origin in the first meeting of the Virginia General Assembly at Jamestown in July 1619, the House of Burgesses was the first democratically-elected legislative body in the British American colonies. About 140 years later, when Washington was elected, the electorate was made up of male landholders.

Virginia Company, Jamestown, & Tobacco

Over the next twenty-five years the Crown sent a succession of governors to Virginia with instructions to limit the power of the assemblies. Attempts at limitation included eliminating annual sessions, prohibiting the legislators from hearing appeals decided in the colony’s General Court, and vetoing bills on certain subjects or even sending them to the king for him to veto. The governors seized from the burgesses the right to appoint the clerk of the House, though the body retained the right to appoint their speaker and other officers. For the next thirty to forty years, Virginia’s royal governors and, to a lesser extent, its councillors, wielded larger shares of political power than the elected burgesses. The House of Burgesses was the first elected legislative assembly in the New World, established in Virginia in 1619. It was composed of two representatives from each of the colony’s 11 districts and was responsible for making laws in the colony, including setting taxes.

Only white men who owned a specific amount of property were eligible to vote for Burgesses. In 1643, the General Assembly became a bicameral body, establishing the democratically-elected House of Burgesses as its lower house, while the royally-appointed Council of State served as the upper house of the legislature. The House of Burgesses had its origins in the so-called Great Charter, issued in 1618 by the Virginia Company of London. The arrangement allowed the Virginia Company to retain corporate control over the region while giving the colonists some measure of self-government. In the summer of 1619, Virginia’s newly appointed governor, Sir George Yeardley, called for the selection of two burgesses, or representatives, from each of the colony’s eleven settlements to meet at Jamestown as the first General Assembly of Virginia. Only John Pory, whom Yeardley named speaker of the assembly, had served in Parliament; the others were inexperienced, but had some knowledge of English government and quickly became aware of their own power.

Like the British House of Commons, the House of Burgesses granted supplies and originated laws, and the governor and council enjoyed the right of revision and veto as did the king and the House of Lords in England. The first law passed by the assembly during its first session was the regulation on the tobacco price to three shillings per pound. During the next six-day session laws were created on bans against gambling, drunkenness, idleness, and Sabbath observance was made compulsory. In May 1776 the House of Burgesses ceased to meet, and the Virginia Constitution of 1776 created a new General Assembly composed of an elected Senate and an elected House of Delegates. Landowners continued to elect representatives to the House of Delegates, two from each county and one from each city. Because the state constitution required that all bills originate in the House (permitting the Senate only to propose amendments), the lion’s share of political power in Virginia was lodged for the next seventy-five years in the House of Delegates.

In the mid-eighteenth century the House of Burgesses reemerged as the most influential branch of the colony’s government. In both cases, their agents enjoyed enough success to result in a compromise that reflected the House’s agenda. Thereafter, the House of Burgesses paid the salary and expenses of an agent in London, just as the governor’s Council did. From 1738 to 1766, John Robinson Jr. held the position of speaker and treasurer. Robinson’s knowledge of parliamentary procedure and long tenure enabled him, arguably, to wield more political power than any other man of his time.

Veteran members of the House usually chaired the most important of the standing committees, providing leadership and experience for committee work and for legislative deliberations. It had been setting the tax rate since the seventeenth century, and it authorized the payment of all claims against Virginia in the eighteenth. The House’s members came by custom in the 1730s and 1740s to have the sole power of introducing new bills in the legislature. During the third quarter of the century, for reasons that are not entirely clear, fewer burgesses chose not to run for reelection or were defeated when they did. The House of Burgess and joint assembly of the colonial governor and his council faced challenges throughout the years.

For reasons that are not known, he did not call for another general election until the spring of 1676. This group of legislators sat for seventeen annual sessions between March 1661 and May 1676, earning them the nickname the Long Assembly (a reference to the Long Parliament of Charles I). During this period the assembly remained the most powerful organ of government in Virginia. It created counties and parishes, which even Parliament did not do in England; it also adopted formal rules of procedure and established the basis of representation as two members from each county and one from the colonial capital, Jamestown.

The first legislature among the English colonies in America was established in Virginia on July 30, 1619, and was known as the House of Burgesses. Historyplex discusses the purpose, facts, and the significance of the Virginia House of Burgesses. These examples are programmatically compiled from various online sources to illustrate current usage of the word 'house.' Any opinions expressed in the examples do not represent those of Merriam-Webster or its editors. The House was presided over by a Speaker and functions were carried out by committees. Washington served on the standing committees of Propositions and Grievances, Elections and Privileges, and Religion, as well as being placed on various committees to write bills or negotiate with other groups. Much of the House’s business was evaluating petitions from the public for specific interventions.

During the early 1600s, Jamestown, a small British colony, was facing hardships due to poor economic conditions and cumbersome military law under Sir Thomas Dale―the appointed marshal of Virginia colony. In order to save its investments and enhance the colony conditions, the Virginia Company of London set up developmental reforms to attract people to the settlement. The word ‘Burgesses’ originated during the Dark Ages when King Alfred the Great (849 – 899 CE) innovated a national defense measure in England by the organization of ‘burghs‘ meaning “fortress” or “castle” or “fortified towns”. The word eventually developed into ‘borough’, meaning a place in London, later a representative official originating from such a place came to be known as ‘Burgess’ in the English House of Commons in Parliament. This is a fantastic bundle which includes everything you need to know about the House of Burgesses across 27 in-depth pages. These are ready-to-use House of Burgesses worksheets that are perfect for teaching students about the House of Burgesses which was created when George Yeardley was elected Governor of Virginia in 1619.

It was created by Governor George Yeardley (c. 1587–1627) under instructions from the Virginia Company of London, which owned the colony of Virginia. In hope of attracting more immigrants to its colony, the company replaced a form of martial law used by the colony's previous governor with English common law. Many of the burgesses, including Washington, met the next day to sign a non-importation association. Three days later Washington joined the burgesses remaining in Williamsburg to sign a resolution calling for a meeting in August which would become the first Virginia Revolutionary convention. The membership of the five Revolutionary conventions was almost entirely made up of burgesses. The tradition established by the House of Burgesses was extremely important to colonial development.

To keep the strategy of fear going, Doug blackmails hacker Aidan Macallan into launching a massive cyberattack on the NSA, slowing down Internet traffic and wiping out hundreds of thousands of files. Underwood's political machine stages a terrorist attack in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is pinned on a local suspected ICO sympathizer. With Pennsylvania secured by Conway and Ohio seeming to swing his way, Frank unofficially calls Conway directly to concede.

Chapter 7

The season ends with Frank and Claire watching the live execution of the hostage together, and Claire breaking the fourth wall for the first time by looking into the camera along with Frank. Robin Wright's portrayal of Claire Underwood in House of Cards will probably go down as one of the most significant and decorated performances on a television program. From lobbyist to the President of the United States, Claire was a driving force which was brought to life by Wright's mastery of the medium. Since the show's shocking finale in 2018, the Golden Globe winner has continued to stay busy with her work in the DC Extended Universe, including the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and the 2021 release of Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Cast and characters

Frank, concerned about Secretary Durant's intention to testify at the impeachment hearing, pushes her down a short flight of stairs upon accepting her resignation, hospitalizing her. Claire poisons Yates with an overdose of Gelsemium provided to her by Jane, concerned that he knows too much. Finally, contractors working for the Underwoods eliminate LeAnn by ramming her car off the road into a guard rail. Frank resigns as president, leaving Claire as the 47th president of the United States. This comes in the form of a military special operations unit finding and taking out the leader of ICO, which moves media focus away from Frank.

Chapter 67

Since House of Cards, Robin Wright has been featured in the likes of Wonder Women and Justice League as Antiope and has also starred in the Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049 as Lieutenant Joshi. Underwood begins a symbiotic, and ultimately sexual, relationship with Zoe Barnes, a young political reporter, secretly feeding her damaging stories about his political rivals to sway public opinion as needed. Meanwhile, he manipulates Peter Russo, a troubled alcoholic congressman from Pennsylvania, into helping him undermine Walker's pick for Secretary of State, Senator Michael Kern. Underwood also uses Russo in a plot to end a teachers' strike and pass an education bill, which improves Underwood's standing with Walker.

Wright is also slated to make her directorial debut with Land, a drama in which she also stars, about a grieving attorney who goes off the grid to escape society. Having filmed the movie before the allegations arose, it ultimately had a detrimental effect on the films commercial ‘success’. In the opening weekend Billionaires Boy Club only made $618 at the box office making it the worst opening of Spacey’s career. Spacey was cut from the film All the Money in the World, and his role as John Paul Getty was instead played by Christopher Plummer.

Eventually, the leaker makes a voice-modulated call to Hammerschmidt, implicating Doug in Zoe's murder. The Underwoods convince Doug to take the fall for killing Zoe, and the leaker is revealed to be Frank himself. The leaks are revealed to be part of Frank's master plan to resign the presidency to Claire, believing his thirst for power can be better achieved in the private sector, working alongside his wife's presidency.

The series is one of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed but also one of the most controversial in the streaming service’s history. Out of the 223 nominations, House of Cards won 27 of the awards, including 7 Primetime Emmys and 2 Golden Globes. House of Cards will forever be recognized as the first original online-only web series to receive Emmy nominations. The sixth season marks the first of the series without Kevin Spacey, who portrayed lead character Frank Underwood. Soon after production began in October 2017, Netflix fired the actor as a result of sexual misconduct allegations made against him. Production was halted for several months while the screenplay was reworked to exclude Spacey's character.

In the resulting trade war with China, Tusk opposes Walker's efforts to deal with the crisis and begins having a tribal casino funnel money into Republican PACs in retaliation. When Frank discovers that Feng is the source of the donations, he gets Feng to end his partnership with Tusk in exchange for a lucrative contract for a bridge over Long Island Sound. Zoe and two colleagues, Lucas Goodwin and Janine Skorsky, continue investigating Frank and ultimately locate Rachel. As a protective measure, Frank's aide Doug Stamper brings Rachel to a safe house while Frank lures Zoe to a Metro station and, unseen by witnesses or security cameras, pushes her in front of an oncoming train. Zoe's death compels Janine to abandon the investigation, but Lucas continues the search alone. However, the hacker, Gavin Orsay, actually works for Doug and frames Lucas for cyberterrorism.

Doug leaks information about Dunbar's secret meeting with Lucas and forces her to suspend her campaign. Frank recovers and resumes his position as president, agreeing to put Claire on the ticket for the upcoming election. Well, that's what the cast of House of Cards has been up to lately, or at least most of the cast. Some have gone on to find a great deal of success in film and television, others found themselves on the line of succession, and others are finding strange ways to fill their time.

As a result, the season was reduced to eight episodes, deviating from the 13-episode format of the previous seasons. Luckily, you're in the right place, because I have put together an extensive list of the most memorable actors and actresses from House of Cards and what they're doing right now. House of Cards is an American political thriller television series created by Beau Willimon. It is based on the 1989 novel of the same name by Michael Dobbs and an adaptation of the 1990 British series of the same name by Andrew Davies, also from the novel.

Frank wins back Claire's support by promising not to sabotage her campaign in Texas, but he later publicly endorses Celia in his State of the Union address. Frank and Claire travel to South Carolina for a primary, but a series of scandals causes Frank to narrowly lose the state to Dunbar. Frank discovers that Claire had been leaking information to Dunbar, and she threatens to continue unless he names her as his running mate. Throughout the season, a writer named Thomas Yates is hired by Frank to write a biography for the purpose of promoting America Works. Yates, a fiction writer with a dark past of his own, decides to put a different spin on the book and writes less about Frank and more about his marriage with Claire. Yates reads Frank a prologue that he does not understand at first, but agrees is a decent beginning.

With her new Cabinet in place, Claire decides to undertake a new, progressive, agenda. The Shepherds, meanwhile, continue to plot her downfall, enlisting the help of Brett Cole, an ambitious Congressman who seeks to become Speaker of the House. Determined to strike back against her enemies, Claire frames Usher for Yates's murder, claiming he colluded with Russia to do so. Claire then reveals to Doug that she is pregnant with Frank's child, who will become his heir even though Frank secretly left his assets to Doug. In the weeks before the 2016 election, Frank uses ICO as a pretext to enacting martial law in urban areas and consolidating polling places in key states.

As the House Judiciary Committee begins drafting articles of impeachment, both Walker and Frank offer Tusk a presidential pardon in exchange for implicating the other. Tusk sides with Walker at first, leaving Frank no other option than to regain the president's trust as a friend. With Walker forced to resign, Frank is sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

Since leaving the series Brosnahan has starred in various different roles but her most outstanding one to date would be playing the lead role in the series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The lead actress of the series, Robin Wright portrayed Claire Underwood, the wife of Frank Underwood and the first female President of the United States. Wright was the only cast member to feature in every single episode of House of Cards and was one of the biggest advocates of the series to receive its final season.

Remy Danton and Jackie Sharp also decide to go on the record against Frank to lend credibility to the story. An American family is kidnapped in Tennessee by two supporters of a radical Islamist group called the Islamic Caliphate Organization (ICO), who agree to negotiate only with the ambitious Republican nominee, Governor Will Conway. Frank invites Conway to the White House to assist in the negotiations as a publicity stunt, and Conway helps buy critical time in locating the suspects. However, tensions between the Conways and Underwoods lead to the governor ending his role in the crisis.

10 Principles of Design: A Quick Guide + Examples GM Blog

elements of design and principles

Trust your instinct, take every principle with a grain of salt, and feel free to dismiss any rule when you feel like it doesn’t make sense to apply it. And even though rules can be broken, they have been created for a reason. Tracks ad performance and user engagement, helping deliver ads that are most useful to you. Enables personalizing ads based on user data and interactions, allowing for more relevant advertising experiences across Google services. Throughout the course, we’ll supply you with lots of templates and step-by-step guides so you can go right out and use what you learn in your everyday practice.

Proportion: Scaling to impress

Each principle plays a pivotal role in organizing or arranging the visual elements in a design, ultimately shaping the viewer's experience. This comprehensive resource provides insights into the interconnectedness of design principles in various mediums. Harmony is the use of similar elements to create a cohesive and pleasing whole. Harmony can be achieved through the use of repetition, rhythm, and pattern. Repeating elements helps to create a sense of unity, while rhythm and pattern can add visual interest and variety. When used effectively, harmony can help to achieve a sense of balance and calm in a design.

Basic Visual Design Principles

The recurrence of an element, color, shape, or form in design is called repetition. It unifies your design elements and gives them a kind of signature look. In some cases, negative space is used to create secondary images that may not be immediately apparent to the viewer. This can be a valuable part of branding that can delight customers. Contrast refers to how different elements are in a design, particularly adjacent elements. Contrast is also a very important aspect of creating accessible designs.

Spacing/Negative Space

To improve the customer journey even more, designers must focus on the minutiae of a site as well. Optimized photos, plenty of whitespace and organized pages all make a site easier to navigate in diverse formats. For example, a visual-based website like an outdoor lifestyle brand will focus on images and visual narratives more than an education-based website. It always circles back to the unique needs of customers and users.

To create visual order, use your design to establish a hierarchy of elements. The principles and elements of design both carry the same weight in executing an effective piece. If you disregard the principles, then you have a visual piece that lacks a story. Emphasis is used to focus the viewer’s attention on a certain part of a composition.

Elements and Principles of Design in Conclusion

elements of design and principles

When she’s not busy writing for the blog, you will usually see her working hard on new illustrations and graphic resources. The principles of design can be incredibly useful if considered at the beginning of a project. They can save a lot of hours later, trying to battle with your design and make it look good. And the last design principle – harmony combines all the other principles into one.

The wave dominates the print, capturing the viewer's attention and creating a sense of dynamic energy. This palpable feeling in a visual is the work of movement, a principle of design that uses contrasting elements to emphasize invisible moving parts in an image. We have put together the essential principles of design that will form your guiding compass as a creator.

However, don’t forget that to break the rules, you have to know them well first. Visual texture refers to the appearance and quality of a surface, suggesting what it’s made of. Just like shape, almost everything around us has texture and we can feel it both with a touch and sight. It can make your line, shape, or form soft, rough as a stone, fluffy, etc. Cyan, magenta, yellow, black (CMYK) are the four basic colors used in printing, so if your design is going to have a digital version, it’s the best option for it.

If, on the other hand, you want to induce a more masculine feeling, then use angular shapes. By reversing this, we can define shapes as something enclosed by lines, which are its boundaries. The great thing about using a design tool such as Creatopy is the fact that you don’t need to create lines from scratch. In the Elements section, you can now find 80 new, end-to-end scalable, flexible lines and arrows.

Achieving balance creates a sense of harmony, stability, and equilibrium. The principles of design help designers follow these cues so that the content they create is easily understood and consumed by the viewers for whom it is intended. It's when every design element and principle comes together as one, creating harmonious flow and tranquility. This is where certain elements guide the viewer's eye through a planned sequence of elements. They can bridge connections to form other elements like lines but can also be used alone to create patterns and texture. In unity blog post, you will find more examples of unity in art created with shape/form, color, texture, line, style, and in architecture.

Proportion refers to the relationships between various elements in a composition. The most common way to think of proportion is in terms of size, but it can also refer to other attributes such as color, shape, and texture. When elements are in harmony with one another, they are said to be in proportion. This can create a sense of balance and stability, making a composition feel harmonious and unified.

They can create excitement (particularly flowing and progressive rhythms) or create reassurance and consistency. Ever wondered why the Parthenon or a perfect spiral shell looks so pleasing? Chances are they adhere to the Golden Ratio—a mathematical ratio found in nature that has influenced art and design for centuries. The right font pairing can create a contrast that elevates your design, guiding the viewer's eye through the content. The fiber used to create this hat is an example of tactile texture. If one were to pick up the hat, or wear it, the texture would be felt through touch.

In art and design, rhythm is created by varying the length, width or shape of elements in your composition. Designers create rhythm by repeating lines, shapes, colors, and other elements. This makes a path for our eyes to follow, builds patterns, and imbues the design with a sense of flow. Texture is the surface quality of an object or image, whether it's perceived as smooth, rough, soft, or hard. It can be both tactile, something you can physically touch, or visual, an illusion created through artistic techniques. Incorporating texture into a design adds richness and complexity, making it more visually engaging and inviting.

Texture can be created by a repeated pattern of lines, or by using tiled images of textures. Above, the diagonal lines add a ‘grip’ effect to an otherwise ‘smooth’ rectangle. Franks Spillers’ design checklist is an example of customized design principles for mobile user experience (UX) design. Making sure all of your design elements flow together nicely is a great way to give your work a professional look and feel.

A source of high-quality vector graphics offering a huge variety of premade character designs, graphic design bundles, Adobe Character Animator puppets, and more. This method combines proximity, space, and movement – harmonious design requires a sense of distance between the elements. Below you can see examples of the movement principle in design in action. A pattern is very pleasing to the eye and we are wired to look for patterns around us. It’s aesthetically pleasing for the eye to have parts of a design, equally placed from both sides of an invisible centerline.

These invisible lines indicate that the train is the subject of this illustration. Inexperienced designers may inadvertently emphasize the wrong parts of the page, creating confusion on the part of the user. You’ve probably heard before someone explaining a piece of art as having a lot of movement. Even though a visual is static, it can still give the feeling as if the design is actually moving.

The White House and its landscaped grounds occupy 18 acres (7.2 hectares). Since the administration of George Washington (1789–97), who occupied presidential residences in New York and Philadelphia, every American president has resided at the White House. Originally called the “President’s Palace” on early maps, the building was officially named the Executive Mansion in 1810 in order to avoid connotations of royalty.

On June 1, 1953, President Dwight D. Hoban’s reconstruction included the addition of east and west terraces on the main building’s flanks; a semicircular south portico and a colonnaded north portico were added in the 1820s. The mansion quickly became a focal point of the new federal city and was symbolically linked to the United States Capitol by way of Pennsylvania Avenue. Following his inauguration in March 1801, Jefferson became the second president to reside in the executive mansion. In keeping with his ardent republicanism, he opened the house to public visitation each morning, a tradition that was continued (during peacetime) by all his successors. He personally drew up landscaping plans and had two earthen mounds installed on the south lawn to remind him of his beloved Virginia Piedmont.

The Neoclassical design of the White House is based primarily on architectural concepts inherited from the Roman architect Vitruvius and the Venetian architect Andrea Palladio. The residence was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban in the Neoclassical style.[4] Hoban modeled the building on Leinster House in Dublin, a building which today houses the Oireachtas, the Irish legislature. Construction took place between 1792 and 1800, with an exterior of Aquia Creek sandstone painted white. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Exterior construction continued with the addition of the semicircular South Portico in 1824 and the North Portico in 1829.

The tactile appeal of wooden cabinets not only adds interest but also infuses the room with a timeless charm that contrasts harmoniously with the typically sleek surfaces of a bathroom. For bathrooms, pair a wooden countertop with a stone sink for visual depth. For a unique twist on the classic bathroom design, consider incorporating an industrial partition.
